That this single love involved sexual attraction is certain. In an earlier episode involving the pair (5.334), Nisus’ love-object is described by the plural amores, more pointedly sexual in its meaning of ‘partner’ than is the singular amor (cf. below, n. 31). The Servian commentary contains a scandalized reaction to Virgil’s use of the plural here.22 We hear also of Cydon, ‘always in love [amorum, plural] with young men’, whose latest passion (nova gaudia) is the youth Clytius,
